Custom Fabrication in Wilmington, NC
When stock lumber will not do, Special Wood fabricates it.
For more than three decades we have produced custom patterns, architectural millwork, and one-of-a-kind woodwork for builders, designers, and architects across Southeastern North Carolina – shaped to your drawings, in the species your project calls for.
Custom Fabrication
Bring us a section of hundred-year-old moulding, a photo of a detail you liked, or a sketch on graph paper. Our artisans reproduce historic profiles, match existing millwork, and build one-of-a-kind pieces — doors, brackets, stair parts, built-ins, furniture — start to finish under one roof.
Our CNC equipment means a custom profile runs the same on piece five hundred as it did on piece one, so repeat trim and moulding runs land on your build schedule. Our Lumber Remanufacturing division has produced architect-designed patterns since 1997. And because fabrication and priming happen in the same building, your piece can arrive sealed and ready to install.
PVC Fabrication
PVC is a large part of what we fabricate, and for good reason: on the coast it does not rot, swell, or feed anything. We machine cellular PVC to the same profiles we cut in wood — handrail, column wraps, exterior trim, brackets, custom shapes — and reinforce spans where the code and the span call for it.
Most suppliers hand you PVC stock and leave the fabrication to your crew on site. We do it in the shop, to your dimensions, so what shows up on the trailer is the finished part.
Our Shop Covers What Usually Takes Three
Your Species, In Stock
Pick from 100,000 square feet of finish-grade and rough inventory on site. If we don't have it, our special-ordering service sources it to your exact specifications.
Artisan craftsmenship + cnc precision
We fabricate the exterior trim and interior moldings that off-the-shelf stock cannot match.
Arrives fabricated and finished
Your piece moves from fabrication to priming without leaving the building, so it ships sealed and ready to install.

FAQ
Can you reproduce or match an existing profile or piece?
Yes. Bring us a sample, a section of the original, or a drawing, and our artisans fabricate a match in the appropriate species. Matching existing millwork sits at the core of what we do.
Do you build custom furniture and architectural elements?
Yes. Our on-site artisans build custom furniture, detailed trim, and one-of-a-kind architectural elements start to finish.
Can you handle production quantities of a custom profile?
Yes. Our CNC equipment runs your custom profile in repeat quantities with the same tolerance on every piece, and we schedule runs around your build timeline.
Can you source exotic or non-stock materials?
Yes. Our special-ordering service brings in architectural-grade beams, exotic woods, and non-stock lumber to your exact specifications.
Who do you work with?
Builders, designers, and architects across Southeastern North Carolina send us their fabrication work, and we work directly with homeowners on custom projects too. Reach out and we'll talk through yours.
Do you fabricate in PVC as well as wood?
Yes. PVC is a large share of our fabrication work. We machine cellular PVC to custom profiles — handrail, column wraps, trim, brackets — including reinforced sections where the span requires it.
Why have PVC fabricated instead of cut on site?
Consistency and labor. A shop-fabricated part arrives at the exact dimension, with clean machined edges and no waste to haul off, and your crew installs instead of fabricating.
